Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD, is settling into the beauty community quite well, having infiltrated everything from body care to make up. It is not a secret that the nonpsychoactive cannabinoid has anti-inflammatory benefits, treating Anxiety, Arthritis, and has even cured some of the rarest skin conditions and eczema. But did you ever guess it could heal and prevent breakouts?

AD

cream or CBD oil works well as an anti-inflammatory so can help to reduce the visibility of soreness and redness in your face when you have a flare up, thereby reducing the severity of the breakout. It can also help regulate overactive oil production in your skin, which is one of the reasons acne flare ups occur. The common way to treat skin conditions is to apply the CBD cream or oil topically and directly on the affected areas.

Studies Suggest CBD Effectively Treats Acne

Research on CBD and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) offers promising results for the treatment of acne. First of all, the ECS has been shown to play a major role in hydrating the skin through the production of lipids. Anandamide, an endocannabinoid, appears to significantly enhance lipid production.

CBD seems to target the root of acne, which is excess sebum. Sebum, a fatty oil, is created by lipids. CBD limits sebum production by preventing anandamide from synthesizing lipids. Additionally, CBD also reduces inflammation, a common symptom of acne.

A study involving Tamás Bíró, an expert in the field of CBD for acne from the University of Debrecen in Hungary, studied CBD’s effects on inhibiting sebum production in human sebaceous glands (glands which produce sebum).

CBD was found to inhibit the production of lipids, the building blocks of sebum, on several lipid-producing compounds. CBD also suppressed proliferation of sebocytes (cells that produce sebum and make up the sebaceous gland).

In addition to reducing sebum production, CBD also demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the elevation of tumor necrosis factor, a common type of cytokine involved in the inflammation associated with acne.

Additionally, a 2015 study discovered that using CBD oil in dermatology helped reduce oil and redness, which was particularly beneficial to those with acne, rosacea, and dandruff. And interestingly, the United States’ Department of Health and Human Services has a patent on cannabinoid as an anti-oxidant, which would potentially have anti-aging and protective benefits for the skin.

Both these effects prompted researchers to “strongly encourage” future clinical trials testing a topical or systemic application of CBD for acne.

Conclusion

While I don’t think you should expect CBD to be a complete cure for severe cases of acne, I do think there is research to support it’s use to both help regulate sebum production and sooth inflammation. In addition, it does so without using harsh chemicals that can create burning, itchy and extremely dry skin. CBD oil can be expensive and making CBD oil at home might be an option for some.

Recipe for Cannabis topical Cream for Acne

You can buy CBD Creams online pretty much everywhere. But you can also make the CBD Cream yourself and know exactly what goes in it. You can buy the CBD oil online and use it the recipe. Or even make the CBD oil at home. Which is a lot cheaper than buying it.

After gently exfoliating and cleansing your face, apply the cream all over your face, including the acne-affected areas.

Tip: For general reference, a single drop of CBD oil equates to roughly 0.05 mL. So if we use a 15 mL, 1500 mg bottle of CBD as an example, 10 drops of oil would give you a 50 mg dose of CBD (10 drops = 0.5mL = 50mg).

The amount of CBD in your recipe depends on the severity of your acne.

Compared to CBD skin products on the market, this recipe is around the same amount of MG CBD per Oz of cream.
