What Are Thyroid Disorders?

First of all, it’s important to know where the thyroid is located and what it’s role is in our bodies.

The thyroid is a small gland, located at the front of your neck. It’s often referred to as a butterfly shape.

It’s role is to regulate hormone secretion, and particularly your metabolism functions.

When your thyroid is working properly, your body will have everything it needs to support healthy metabolism.

Hypothyroidism

When your thyroid is underactive, and sluggish, it’s also not producing enough hormones that your body needs.

The major tell-tale signs of this may include:

  • muscle weakness
  • pain
  • stiffness, and swelling in the joints
  • thinning hair
  • impaired memory
  • weight gain
  • elevated blood cholesterol level

How To Test For Hypothyroidism

To test for this condition, you’ll need to get your Doctor to write a requisition so that you can get blood work done.

The blood work will determine the level of TSH in your blood. TSH stands for thyroid-stimulating hormones.

Most medical professionals will prescribe synthetic hormone replacement drugs which you will need to take daily, however, CBD may help support a healthy thyroid.

Hyperthyroidism

On the flip side, your thyroid can also become over-active.

People experiencing hyperthyroidism will notice the following as indicators that they need to get checked by a medical professional:

  • rapid or irregular weight loss ( this happens when the gland produces too much thyroxine)
  • rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • insomnia

Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed using the combination of a physical exam and blood tests to confirm low levels of TSH.

Can CBD Help Thyroid Conditions?

The cannabis plant contains naturally occurring compounds known as cannabinoids.

One of them is called CBD, and because of the extraction process, it does not contain THC ( the compound which gets you high).

The cool thing about us humans is that we all have an endocannabinoid system, and all of these little receptors throughout our bodies.

The main responsibility of the ECS is to maintain balance.

The ECS is made up of three components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

The endocannabinoids bind to specific receptors in order to carry out specific functions.

Enzymes then break down the endocannabinoids once they have carried out their function.

Research shows the direct link to the ECS with a number of processes within our bodies such as metabolism, pain, motor control, and muscle, skin and nerve formations.

CBD and other cannabinoids actually and physically interact with the ECS in order to maintain balance.

There are many ways to consume CBD – through oil, capsules, or by making your own at-home CBD gummies, treats or extractions.

Even More Clinical Research on CBD

Even more research on CBD has demonstrated that it may be helpful in several important ways, including relieving pain and inflammationreducing anxiety, and suppressing seizures just to name a few.

CBD could be useful for those experiencing thyroid conditions and/or disorders.

A study done on rats strongly suggests that cannabinoids may have a direct influence on thyroid hormone activity.

These receptors have been found in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), an area of the brain that sends signals to the thyroid.

Studies also indicate that CBD may influence the metabolism.

ECS plays a significant role in regulating metabolism. CBD may allow individuals with a thyroid disorder to balance their metabolism.

While more research is needed, the very fact that the ECS connects chemically with CBD receptors in regulating the thyroid is promising!

If you suffer from either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, CBD may be useful to manage your symptoms.
