3. The Science of CBD Oil & Dogs

What Science Says About CBD for Your Dog

So, how does CBD affect dogs? Right now, there is a wealth of anecdotal reports available online saying CBD helps with anxiety, seizures, joint pain, nausea and inflammation.

But how much of that is actually true? Much of what we know about CBD and dogs is purely anecdotal, which means it can’t altogether be trusted.

Unfortunately, according to this study in Toxicology Communications (2018), there are still some looming gaps in scientific knowledge about CBD and pets.

Right now we know that there are few if any side effects of CBD in dogs, which is promising.

If your dog is taking other medications or experiencing liver problems, CBD may not be a good option for your pup – but check with your Vet for the all-clear before starting.

4. Best Tips For Deciding If CBD is Right For Your Pup

  • Look for organic. If the CBD oil is not organic, it at least should not contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents. Bad for Fido!
  • Don’t price shop. The higher the quality and purity, the higher the cost. You don’t want to go for a cheaper option that could have toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals.
  • Get the Facts. The manufacturer should provide a certificate that tells you the amount of CBD that is in the product. Many CBD products contain only small amounts of CBD. You’ll also want to make sure there is little or no THC in the product.
  • Buy from a Reputable Company You can buy dog treats containing CBD that are safe and come from a reputable company.

5. What You Need To Know About CBD & Dogs

AKC’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, explains what CBD oil, in particular, is, what it does, and its safety concerns and side effects for our pups.

We want the best for our four-legged friends, but doing the research and making sure everything you allow them to consume is safe and Vet-approved is key.
